If you've spent any time exploring the world of natural yellow diamonds, you've probably come across the terms Fancy Intense Yellow and Fancy Vivid Yellow. They're two of the most coveted color grades, and while the difference between them may seem subtle at first glance, it's one of the most important distinctions in the world of colored diamonds. It all comes down to color saturation - but, like most things in gemology, there's a lot more to the story. Let's dive in!

Understanding How Fancy Color Diamonds Are Graded

Most people think about diamonds in terms of size, clarity, or perhaps how "white" they are. Fancy color diamonds operate by a completely different set of rules! With colorless diamonds, the goal is (most often) the absence of color. But with fancy color diamonds, color is exactly what you're hoping to find. The richer, purer, and more saturated the color, the rarer - and generally more valuable - the diamond becomes.

To evaluate that color, the GIA looks at three key characteristics: hue (the color itself), tone (how light or dark it appears), and saturation (the strength and intensity of the color). Together, those three factors determine where a diamond falls on the fancy color grading scale. For yellow diamonds, the scale progresses from Fancy Light Yellow to Fancy Yellow, then Fancy Intense Yellow, and finally Fancy Vivid Yellow - the highest grade for yellow color saturation. As you move up the scale, the yellow becomes increasingly rich, concentrated, and vibrant.

What Is a Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond?

A Fancy Intense Yellow diamond is exactly what its name suggests: intensely yellow! The color is golden, warm, and beautifully saturated, making it immediately recognizable as a fancy-colored diamond. Although they sit one grade below Fancy Vivid Yellow on the GIA grading scale, Fancy Intense diamonds are extraordinary in their own right, and our clients love them. Many of my favorite yellow diamonds fall into this category because they offer an ideal balance of hue and saturation.  You can get an incredibly similar look to a Fancy Vivid yellow - often without paying the premium that comes with the higher color grade.

What Is a Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond?

A Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond represents the highest level of yellow color saturation recognized by the GIA. The color is exceptionally rich, vivid, and evenly distributed, displaying the strongest and most concentrated yellow appearance possible. Because so few natural yellow diamonds achieve this level of saturation, Fancy Vivid Yellow diamonds are among the rarest and most valuable fancy colored diamonds. Interestingly, color isn't determined by nature alone - how a yellow diamond is cut can have a meaningful impact on how strongly that color presents, which is why cutting fancy color diamonds is a very different art than cutting colorless ones.

How Collectors Think About Yellow Diamonds

Both Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid Yellow diamonds occupy an exceptionally rare corner of the gemstone world. While they're separated by just one step on the GIA grading scale, that single step represents a meaningful increase in color saturation and, with it, rarity.

For collectors, the conversation rarely ends with the color grade. Transparency, cut, color distribution, and the overall personality of the diamond all matter just as much. That's why two yellow diamonds with the same grade can leave completely different impressions, making the search for an exceptional stone all the more nuanced. While this is how the GIA assigns color grades, we always encourage our collectors to follow their heart and trust their instincts when choosing the unique shade of yellow that speaks to them most.
