What do you do with heirloom pearls sitting in a piece you'll never wear? You turn them into something you actually want to put on.
In this case, our client came to us with an inherited pearl ring that held a lot of sentimental value for her but wasn't getting any time outside the jewelry box. The pearls were beautiful, but the design just didn’t fit her style. Fortunately, the pearls themselves had plenty of potential.
The Before
The original ring featured a cluster of seed pearls arranged in a floral-style design. While charming, it felt much more traditional than the jewelry our client wears today. This is something we encounter all the time with inherited jewelry. The stones are wonderful, but the mounting no longer feels relevant to the way someone dresses or collects.
Rather than forcing ourselves to stay within the confines of the original design, we focused on what we wanted to preserve: the beautiful pearls!
The Reset
Our clients absolutely love medallion-style pendants, and for good reason! They're easy to wear, easy to layer, and feel both antique and modern at the same time.
For this piece, we removed the original pearls and used them to create a dimensional border surrounding a hand-crafted gold medallion. A radiating sunburst pattern gives the gold center texture and movement, while a single diamond at the center provides a sparkly focal point.
The finished piece feels completely different from the original ring, but still carries the same sentimental connection!
Why It Works
One of the biggest mistakes people make with heirloom jewelry is assuming the finished piece needs to stay in the same category. For example, a ring does not have to become another ring. In this case, our client mentioned she wears necklaces and has a stack she wears everyday as a part of her jewelry uniform. We decided a pendant would fit seamlessly into her jewelry wardrobe and allow the pearls to become part of her everyday life rather than something reserved for the back of a jewelry box. The medallion is also removable from the chain, giving her flexibility to wear it on different necklaces or incorporate it into a larger charm story down the road.
The pearls remain the heart of the design, but the overall look feels fresher, more versatile, and far more aligned with how our client wears jewelry today. And that's really the goal of every heirloom reset project - not simply preserving a piece, but giving it a second life!
