From Children’s Drawings to Wearable Heirlooms

Some of our favorite custom projects begin with something far more meaningful than a gemstone. In this case, our client came to us carrying a collection of artwork created by her children during an unimaginably difficult chapter of life. After the loss of their father, the children created these abstract portraits of their mom that were playful, imaginative interpretations that reflected how they saw and celebrated her. The drawings were incredibly creative, funny, and completely unfiltered in the way only children’s artwork can be! None were intended to become jewelry, yet each captured a fleeting moment of childhood that our client felt deserved to be preserved.

The Challenge

Rather than simply reproducing the drawings, our goal was to translate their spirit into fine jewelry through our Serpentine lens.

We studied every detail: the shapes, colors, proportions, and quirky compositions that made each piece unmistakably theirs. The challenge wasn’t creating literal miniatures. It was finding a way to capture the creativity, humor, and personality of the original artwork while transforming it into pieces sophisticated enough to wear every day.

The Design Process

Each drawing became the starting point for a custom charm! A geometric face collage inspired a pendant composed of stacked shapes, diamonds, and colored gemstones arranged in the same playful composition as the original artwork. The bright classroom project inspired another charm through blocks of color and clean architectural lines. Even the whimsical pink mirror found its way into the collection through carefully chosen gemstones and design motifs that echoed the original creation.

Working in gold, diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and other colored gemstones allowed us to preserve the vibrant energy of the drawings while elevating them into heirloom-quality pieces.

The Finished Necklace

The final necklace became a wearable gallery of childhood memories! Each charm references a different drawing, but together they tell a larger story: one of family, resilience, love, and the unique way children see the people they cherish most. What began as construction paper, markers, tape, and classroom projects now lives on in gold and gemstones!
