From Engagement Ring Side Stones to Earring Jackets

Some of our favorite redesign projects begin with a question we hear all the time: "What should I do with the diamonds from my original ring?"

In this case, our client had recently reset her engagement ring, giving the center diamond an entirely new look. But that left behind a beautiful pair of trapezoid side stones (one of our favorite diamond and gemstone shapes!) that had been part of her ring for years. The diamonds held sentimental value and were far too special to sit unworn in a jewelry box, so we gave them new life!

The Challenge

Trapezoid diamonds can be tricky stones to repurpose. Their geometric shape is beautiful, but it doesn't naturally lend itself to many traditional jewelry designs. Rather than forcing them into a pendant or another ring, we wanted to create something that would flatter their shape and become a piece of jewelry she could wear all the time.

The Design Process

We landed on one of our favorite solutions: detachable Serpentine earring jackets!

Using the original trapezoid diamonds, we created custom yellow gold bezel settings that highlight the lines of the stones while adding just enough contrast to make the diamonds pop. The jackets were engineered to sit perfectly beneath her existing diamond studs, creating the illusion of a completely new pair of earrings.

When worn together, the look feels architectural and sophisticated, with the trapezoids adding shape, movement, and a subtle Art Deco influence beneath the round brilliant diamonds. Remove the jackets, and she is left with the classic diamond studs she wears every day.

The Result

What was once a pair of side stones within an engagement ring is now a piece she can enjoy in an entirely different way! We love earring jackets because they're the jewelry equivalent of a quick outfit change. Her diamond studs are still the foundation, but with the addition of the trapezoid jackets, they take on a completely different personality - offering an effortless way to go from understated to something a little more special in seconds.

And because the diamonds came from her original engagement ring, every time she wears them, she's carrying a piece of that story with her.
